Section 1: Trends in the Economy

We’re in difficult times as I edit some of my best columns for this e-book. But, frankly, we’re not in as bad of shape as the idiotic media would have you believe.

Yes, 10% of people are unemployed, and another 10% underemployed. What this means is that 80% of the nation is well-employed. Now, I don’t discount the very real pain those of you who are unemployed are going through. But we need to keep our chins up and be realistic!
This is the reality. We are in a serious downturn, yes. But the economy is still growing, just not as fast as it was or could be. Companies and people will emerge from this downturn (as they do from every downturn) better, faster and more able to compete on a global scale. This is business Darwinism in action. And it is good for America, believe it or not.

This set of columns is about some of the trends in the economy and how to handle them. These columns will also help you through this temporary, though painful, cycle in the economy. We all have good days and bad days. So does the economy. The economy is having a “bad hair day” right now. But you know those folks who say that the economy is basically sound and that Capitalism and a free market economy are the best things to ever happen to us as a people. Well, they’re right.

In a free market economy we have booms….and busts. Some of the rah-rahs forgot that and didn’t plan for it. Some of us didn’t forget this and did. These columns will help you survive and plan for the future. I hope you enjoy and I hope that they give you both hope and help.

Section 2: Character

This set of columns is probably the most important set I have written. It deals with the most important business issue of all — character.

Far too few people in the business world today have a good character. Most businesspeople are far more concerned about how much money they can make and how much power they can amass than about being a good man or woman. This is why American business, if it does not change, is completely doomed.

I hope this set of columns begins everyone thinking about character and how essential integrity is to the business world. Most of these columns were originally published in a publication I have, so far, found to be of the highest character, ColoradoBiz Magazine Today. I am proud to write for them, and hope you read them in print or online consistently. The remaining ones were written for my CEO Job Expert blog at www.ceojobexpert.com, a blog that I write and maintain.

If I sound hopelessly old fashioned….I am. But the old fashioned values of honesty, integrity and commitment, while currently out of fashion, seem to make amazing comebacks time after time. I trust they will this time, as well.

Section 3: Executive Attitudes

Executives are often judged on their attitudes even more than their production or work. Being an executive is at least as much presence as performance.

These are some of the essential elements of executive presence. We’ve all seen incompetent executives with great presence get the job over the competent executive without the “command presence” that executives need.

Follow these principles and you’ll look and act like a top executive…and very soon, if you’re not already one, will be one. If you’re already a top executive, remember that presence is still very important to those who have “made it” as well as those trying to get to the top.

Section 4: Networking

At the executive level, the best way to get a job is to be well-networked. At virtually any level these days, most good jobs are found by networking.
Too many people, however, don’t know how to network effectively. Here are a few tips on great networking. More are found in two of my books, In Transition: Rapidly Finding Your Next Executive Job (Even in Difficult Times) and Getting Employed: Rapidly Finding Your Next Position (Even in Difficult Times). The latter book is for non-executive folks, and the book In Transition is for those at the executive levels.
This section, however, will give a few tips and tricks to effective networking.

Section 5: Stupid Tricks

This section deals with some of the worst career limiting moves that people can make.
One of the first rules of life is: “Survive.” If you are not careful in a difficult economy, you will be a target for a RIF or for termination. If you do enough stupid human tricks, you will rapidly become unemployable in your town, as the only thing faster than the speed of light is the speed of executive grapevine gossip.
I had one acquaintance who had built up such a nasty reputation in Denver that he had to move to the Midwest to even get an interview. People would be very interested…until they learned his name. You certainly don’t want to be in that situation.
If you have done some of these stupid career moves, don’t despair. Most of the time executives can recover and move up the ladder by playing by the rules. What are the rules? Ah, I’m afraid that book isn’t done yet….but I’m working on it, and it is coming very soon! In the meantime, just avoid some of these career limiting moves and you’ll find yourself moving up as you look better and better against those who are making these mistakes.
